How this salary calculator works
Your CTC (cost to company) is what your employer spends on you — not what lands in your bank account. Statutory deductions are removed first: 12% of your basic salary goes to EPF, a flat ₹2,500 per year goes to professional tax, and the rest is subject to income tax. This calculator applies the new-regime income tax slabs with the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried individuals, then divides what's left by 12.
The formula, step by step
- EPF = 12% × annual basic salary
- Taxable income = CTC − EPF − ₹75,000 (standard deduction)
- Income tax on the taxable income, using these new-regime slabs:
Taxable income Tax rate Up to ₹4,00,000 Nil ₹4,00,001 – ₹8,00,000 5% ₹8,00,001 – ₹12,00,000 10% ₹12,00,001 – ₹16,00,000 15% ₹16,00,001 – ₹20,00,000 20% ₹20,00,001 – ₹24,00,000 25% Above ₹24,00,000 30% - Section 87A rebate: if taxable income is ₹12,00,000 or less, the entire tax is rebated — you pay zero tax. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief caps your tax at the income earned above ₹12 lakh, so crossing the threshold never costs you more than the extra income.
- 4% health and education cess is added on the tax after rebate.
- Monthly in-hand = (CTC − EPF − professional tax − income tax) ÷ 12.
Worked example
Say your CTC is ₹12,00,000, basic is ₹6,00,000 and HRA is ₹2,40,000:
- EPF = 12% × ₹6,00,000 = ₹72,000
- Taxable income = ₹12,00,000 − ₹72,000 − ₹75,000 = ₹10,53,000
- Slab tax = 5% of ₹4,00,000 + 10% of ₹2,53,000 = ₹20,000 + ₹25,300 = ₹45,300
- Section 87A: taxable income is below ₹12,00,000, so tax = ₹0
- Annual in-hand = ₹12,00,000 − ₹72,000 − ₹2,500 − ₹0 = ₹11,25,500
- Monthly in-hand = ₹11,25,500 ÷ 12 = ₹93,792
India-specific notes
- New regime is the default since FY 2023-24, so most salaried employees are taxed under these slabs unless they explicitly opt for the old regime.
- The new regime does not allow HRA exemption or 80C deductions — if you claim those, switch to the old regime and check the income tax calculator.
- Professional tax is a state levy: Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal and several other states charge it, some don't. ₹2,500/year is a common ceiling.
- EPF is mandatory on basic wages up to ₹15,000/month for covered establishments; employers often apply the 12% on full basic. Your employer also contributes 12%, split between EPF and EPS.
- Variable pay, bonuses and overtime are usually paid separately and may be taxed in the month of payout — they aren't in this estimate.
Frequently asked questions
How is in-hand salary calculated from CTC in India?
In-hand salary = (CTC − EPF − professional tax − income tax) ÷ 12. EPF is 12% of basic salary, professional tax is about ₹2,500 per year, and income tax is calculated under the new regime after a ₹75,000 standard deduction.
Which tax regime does this salary calculator use?
It uses the new tax regime for FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27, which is the default. Slabs run from 0% up to ₹4 lakh to 30% above ₹24 lakh, with a ₹75,000 standard deduction, a Section 87A rebate that makes tax zero up to ₹12 lakh income, marginal relief just above that, and 4% health and education cess.
What is EPF in the salary calculation?
EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) is mandatory retirement saving: 12% of your basic salary is deducted from your pay each month, and your employer contributes a matching 12% (partly into EPS). This calculator deducts only your 12% share from the CTC.
Why is professional tax deducted from my salary?
Professional tax is a state-level levy on salaried income, charged in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal — though some states don't levy it at all. Rates vary by state and salary slab; this calculator uses a flat ₹2,500 per year estimate.
How accurate is this salary estimate?
It's a planning estimate, not your exact payslip. It leaves out variable pay, bonuses, overtime, voluntary PF, insurance premiums, and old-regime deductions such as HRA exemption and 80C investments. For a slab-by-slab tax breakdown, use our income tax calculator.
